About 3,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk” in Portland next week.  The walk is set for Sunday, October 14,  at 11 am at Monument Square, Portland.*  The Opening Ceremonies run from 10 am until 11 am. Registration is still open and begins at 10 am inside One City Center (Food Court area in lower level). 

This rain or shine event is a three-mile, non-competitive walk to support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to fight breast cancer through research, education, advocacy and local patient services.  There will be Opening Ceremonies (10 am to 11 am) with a number of local speakers including city councilor John Coyne.  Water is donated by Poland Spring and free parking is at the One City Center Parking Garage (use Free Street entrance only).

The walk runs from Monument Square to the Eastern Promenade and starts at 11 am.  However, all intersecting side streets that enter Congress Street between Monument Square and the Eastern Promenade will be barricaded beginning at 10:45 am and will re-open as soon as all participants pass through the area.

After reaching the Eastern Promenade, walkers will turn onto Cutter Street and follow the Eastern Promenade ‘trail to the corner of India and ‘Commerical Streets, traveling along Commercial Street to Center Street, and return to Monument Square. All roads should be open and traffic flow back to normal by 12:30 pm.  Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm.
