This week, Senator Susan Collins defended her vote to send Americans — including Graham Platner — off to fight in the Iraq War by repeating a long debunked claim linking Iraq to the 9/11 attacks according to a press release received this morning from the Platner campaign.

FROM THE WASHINGTON POST:

“Collins defended her Iraq War vote in  a statement to The Post, saying she was addressing the greatest terrorist attack in our history.”

President George W. Bush’s admiistratdion’s ‘decision to protect the United States against terrorism was a logical response to that attack in my judgment,” Collins said before noting that the vote was bipartisan and included now Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) and then-Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware).  No federal investigtion into the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, including the congressional joint inquiry found any evidence linkig Iraq to the attacks.”

In response Graham Platner said the following:  “Susan Collins still uses 9/11 to justify her disastrous vote on the Iraq War.  The problem is:  it was Al-Qaeda who attacked us, Senator.  They were in Afghanistan, not Iraq.  But that didn’t stop you from sending me to both.”

This exchange comes after Collins dodged taking accountability for sending Americans to fight in the forever war she voted for, instead attacking and blaming veterans like Graham Planer who honorably signed up to serve their country.  As Graham said at the time:  “There’s nothing more Orwellian than voting to send 18-year-olds to die in another forever war — and then blaiming them for it.  Real leadership is admitting when you were wrong, not doubling down for decades.”
