US Senate Report Highlights Patient Harm of ‘Defunding’ Planned Parenthood

More than six months after the Trump Administration and its supporters in Congress removed Planned Parenthood health centers and other reproductive care providers from the federal Medicaid program, a new report finds tens of thousands of patients across the country have been forced to forgo essential health care including birth control, cancer screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and more a Planned Prenthood healh centers; 23 Planned Parenthood healh centers across the country have closed since July 2025.  No Planned Parenthood health centers have closed in Maine.  However, Maine Family Planning was forced to end primary care at three rural sites.

The report comes six months after President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ provision in HR 1 “defunding” Planned Parenthood took effect and two months after the Republican Study Committee, the conservative caucus of US House Republicans, released its roadmap for the 2026 federal budget reconciliation package, including a proposal to make an unconstitutional ‘defunding’ of Planned Parenthood permament.

The data in the Senate report makes clear that since the “defund” provisio in HR 1 took effect, patients have faced significant hardships in accessing essential, afordable health care they need.

In Mane, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNN) has  born the burden and shielded patients from the harm of the HR 1, continuing to welcome patients on Medicare (MaineCare), despite not beng reimbursed for the services provided to those patients including cancer screenings, contraception and other non-abortion care.
