Senator Richard Blumenthal, (D-CT) said today that Democrat members of the Senate Armed Services Committee have requested that the Inspector General of the Defense Department convene an in-depth investigation into the security breach of classified material that became public knowledge when Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of “The Atlantic” magazine said that he had been erroneously invited to participate in the Signal chat room – a chat room reserved for unclassified material. The contents of this material have been judged to be classified by intelligence experts.
Senator Blumenthal said that 16 Democrats have signed the letter requesting a “sprawling” investigation. He elaborated that sometimes these investigations take months or longer to occur, but the group was asking for an “aggressive” and prompt investigation into the security breach of classified material released on the Signal platform by the Trump administration. The Senator, a former prosecutor, said he believes that crimes were likely committed and there are grounds for legal action against members of the Trump administration. He cited violations of the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Federal Records Act.
In the meantime, the Connectcut Senator called for the resignation or firing of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Michael Waltz. It was Waltz who invited Editor Jeffrey Goldberg, to the Signal platform. This blogger can’t help but wonder if the Secretary of Defense Hegseth wasn’t perhaps drinking on the job that he pledged to forgo if appointed to this position.
This blogger has tried repeatedly to reach Senator Susan Collins’ (R-ME) Washington, DC office today and over the last several days to determine her position on this investigation. However, the Senator’s DC office is not accepting telephone calls from the public at this time. It’s a subject that she would understandebly like to avoidI Maine needs a full-time Senator rather than a Part-time Senator. If you want to give her office a try, the DC phone number is: 202 – 224-2523. If you get through, ask her Senatte staff what the Senator is dong to try to keep the Social Security Administration office located in Presque Isle from shutting down by Convicted Felon Trump.
