A second soft opening was held on Wednesday, June 29th, when SCALES, Portland’s  waterfront seafood mecca, opened its doors for lunch according to Chef Mike Smith this afternoon in the open kitchen.  He began work at SCALES late last year as reported in  this blog.

The luncheon menu includes a wide range of choices – from soups, iced shellfish, salads, sandwiches, plates and fried items – desserts are a popular item on the menu.  SCALES, the gift to the public of Chef Sam Haywood and his business partner, Dana Street. By the way,  the Cherry Cheesecake is not to be missed by many accounts.

“I wish I could have eaten more,” said Terry Loux, of his Beer Battered Fish and Chips.  He described his fish as flaky, moist, and very tasty.  Debbie, his wife, said her steamed lobster was – “perfect” and “beyond description.”  The family has been in Maine for the past week.  “I’ve always wanted to come to Maine, but I had to wait twenty-five (25) years to get here.”

SCALES is open for lunch every day between 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.  It is located at 68 Commercial Street, Portland.
