The City of Portland has just announced that it will be opening a shelter at the Portland Exposition Building, 239 Park Avenue beginning at 8 pm. It will be equipmmed with basic necessities; food, water, cots and public restrooms. City staff and medical personnel will be on site to provide assistance. Individuals seeking shelter at the Portland Expo should plan to bring any medications, cell phones with chargers and other essentials. Residents with immediate medical needs such as energy dependent medical devices should bring a supoprt person with them to the shelter for assistance. PETS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE SHELTER.
Waterfront and lowland areas like the neighborhoods in Bayside, Stroudwater Crossing and the Back Cove should anticipate flooding during the astronomical high tide Monday morning and should make appropriate preparations. Gale winds can cause downed limbs and power lines. Residents should call the Department of Public Services to report tree limbs down in city streets, 207 – 874-8393.
The city cannot guarantee that ferry service will be available to island residents throughout Sunday. Island residents who wish to seek shelter on the mainland are encouraged to secure their homes today and leave the island this evening.
