Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME), a long-time farmer and Member of the House Agriculture Committee, led 15 Members of Congress in calling on the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to immediately disburse nearly $50 million funding for farmers and ranchers that has been inexplicitly delayed.
If the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program funding for fiscal year 2025 is not released to regional partners by September 30, farmers and ranchers across the country will lose out on the only producer-led program that supports research, demonstration, and education projects across a wide range of topics related to sustainable agriculture.
“At a time when farmers and ranchers are facing increased costs and significant uncertainity, it is unacceptable for the Department to be withholding funding approved by Congress that delivers both short-time financial support and strategies for long-term viability,” said Congresswoman Pingree and her fifteen colleagues in a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins dated September 16, 2025.
