Abatement & Demolition Set to Start on Former Adams School - Week of 5/16

By Carol McCracken  (Post # 775)

The public is invited to attend a second informational meeting on the conversion of the  former Adams School into 16 condominium units.  The meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, May 12 between 6 – 7 pm at the Shailer School Community Room, 56 North Street in the bottom of the building.  Ethan Boxer-Macomber, Avesta Housing, the hosting organization, will facilitate the meeting.

The abatement & demolition process is scheduled to begin the week of May 16th.  The first two weeks of the process will be devoted to removing toxins from the old school.  According to Ethan Boxer-Macomber, Avesta Housing, there is lots of asbestos in the former  School that was built in the late 50s.  That is why an expert from the abatement company hired to remove it from the building will be there to make a presentation and answer your questions. The entire process – from abatement to demolition is expected to take close to 6 weeks to complete.

About 50 property owners in the immediate area of the schoold were notified of the upcoming meeting yesterday by postcard.   However, the many renters in the area were not notified because the City of Portland does not require that of Avesta Housing or any other developer under similar circumstances.   Please let your neighbors know of this meeting so they can attend and have questions answered.  The Maine DEP will also be represented at the meeting.

For more details, please call Ethan Boxer-Macomber, Avesta Housing, at 553-7777 or at: emacomber@avestahousing.org
