Thousands rallied at Congress Square Park early this evening where they heard numerous speakers from all backgrounds warn of the perils to our democracy by the Trump administration. That portion of the May Day event began around 6:00 pm. It was scheduled to end around 6:30 pm; whether or not it did is unknown to this blogger who did not stick around!
The March was scheduled to leave the USM Portland campus at 3:30 pm and wind its way around Portland – ending up with a final rally at Congress Square Park starting at 5:30 pm. However, the March arrived closer to 6:00 pm. delaying the whole event slightly.
Unfortunately, this blogger could not get close enough to the speakers in Congress Square Park to hear the details because of the massive size of the crowd. But the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd was contagious for anyone near downtown Portland. The creativeness of the signs was amazing and will be seen from time to time on this blog.
The edge of Congress Square Park was ringed with vendors. Some represented political parties and there was a table supplying hungry folks with food and water. The ACLU had a table with the non-profit’s outreach organizer explaning the work of the organization to the public. The ACLU has been at the front of many of the successful and hard fought lawsuits against the Trump administration. For more on that, please visit post herein dated April 27, 2025.
