Governor Mills to Promote Maine at International Business Summit This Week

Governor Janet T. Mills (D), the first woman governor of Maine and the state’s first woman attorney general, and Commissioner of Economic and  Community Development Heather Johnson will participate in the Select USA Investment Summit at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.  The Summit runs from Tuesday, May 2nd through Thursday, May 4th.

The annual summit, organized by the US Department of Commerce, brings together investors, companies, business executives, ecoomic developent organizations and government officials to promote the US as a destination for investment.  Organizers estimate that more than 1,200 business investors from more than 70 international markets will attend the Summit.

The Governor and Commissioner Johnson, who will be joined by Maine International Trade Center President Wade Merritt, will use the summit as an opportunity to promote Maine’s economic strengths and to put Maine on the map for foreign inventory who are considering establishing or expanding business.

On Wednesday, Governor Mills will participate in the SelectUSA Investment Summit Governor Roundtable with US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and several fellow governors.  The Rounddtable will serve as a platform to attract investment to states, leveragiang the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act and will highlight successful collaboration between higher education, state and local partners and the private sector to build a compeetitive workforce.  Governos Mlls is expected to talk about how investments by her administration to strengthen Maine’s workforce, along with energy and climate innovations in Maine’s heritage industries – like sustainable new building materials produced from Maine forest products – have made Maine an exciting opportunity for international investors.  The Roundtable will be closed to press.

On Thursday, Governor Mills will join several fellow governors for a plenary session called “Critical Industries and Industrial Progress Advanced Manufacturing and Clean Energy Technologies,” moderated by Jon Creyts, chief executive officer of RMI.  The discussion  will focus on innovations in advanced manufacturing and clean energy technologies that are vital to lowering energy costs, strenghtening the power grid and creating good-paying jobs.  Governor Mills is expected to highlight her commitment to more than double Maine’s clean energy jobs to 30,000 by 2020, by responsibly growing the clean energy economy through innovative public-private partnerships, scientific research and innovation and maximizing the historic investments available to Maine from the Federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act.

“With nation-leading economic growth, strong rates of in-migration and new, innovative technologies that are creating new investment opportunities in our heritage opportunities, there has never been a better time for investors to bet on Maine,” said Governor Mills.  “Over the next few days, I look forward to showcasing our state and sending the clear message to potential investors that Maine is ready to say “Welcome Home” to their businesses.”
