Thanks to a bill sponsored by the Hill’s own freshman Senator Justin Alfond, (D), the Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Co. (“MEMIC”), now offers employment practices liability insurance to its policyholders regardless of the number of its employees. Prior to the enactment of LC 606, MEMIC could only offer this insurance to policyholders with fewer than 100 employees.

On April 16, Governor Baldacci signed the legislation, An Act to Enable the Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company to Better Secure the Needs of All Employees into law.

In a press release issued today, Senator Alfond said: “I agreed to sponsor this legislation because it will allow MEMIC to continue their great service to Maine businesses. I was proud to support it and am happy to see it become law. The law will help MEMIC grow their business by offering a new product to Maine employers, regardless of size.”

MEMIC was created in 1992 to write workers’ compensation for Maine employers.
