Burglary Arrests Made at New Homeless Services Center Construction Site Last Night

An alert citizen notified police that he had seen two people exiting the construction site of the city’s new Homeless Services Center, 654 Riverside Street, just after 11:00 pm on Monday, August 15, 2022 according to a press release issued by the Portland Police early this morning.

When officers arrived on scene theyheard noises coming from a nearby section of a Portland Trails trail system and located Edward Demers (DOB 11-04-1979) and Chayne Markie (DOB 02-08-1999) Portland residents, pushing wheelbarrows loaded with cooper that had been stolen from the construction site.

A short time later an officer checking nearby businesses located a pickup truck belonging to Markie in the parking lot of Waste Management.  The bed of the pickup contained several battery powered tools.  It was determined that the tools belonged to a company working in the construction site

The stolen cooper was valued at more than $20,000. and the tools were estimated to be worth $8,500.

Both suspects were arrested for Burglary Felony Theft, Criminal Mischief and Refusal to Submit to Arrrest and taken to the Cumberland County Jail.  Markie was also charged with Violation of Conditions of Release.
