Portland Police are investigating two separate armed robberies that occurred late at night during the past week. Police are concerned that these robberies may be connected and urge everyone to be cautious. Remain aware of your surroundings, stay in well lighted areas and report any suspicious activity to 911 according to a press release issued by the Police Department this afternoon.
The first incident occurred on Friday, February 6th about 10:00 pm. Two women were walking on Congress Street, near Lincoln Park when a man robbed one of them. The man grabbed the purse of a 56-year-old woman while pointing a handgun at her. There was a brief struggle until the victim realized the man had a gun and she surrendered her purse. The perpetrator fled on foot and was seen entering a dark-colored sedan, possibly an older four door Mercedes-Benz. The suspect is described as a male, possibly mixed race or having a dark complexion. He is 5’0” to 6’0” tall with a medium build with scruffy facial hair.
The second incident occurred on Wednesday, February 11th at about 11:40 pm. A 25-year old Portland woman walking in the area of 148 Clark Street was robbed at gunpoint. A man approached from behind, displayed a gun and demanded her purse. After taking her purse, the perpetrator fled down Clark Street. The suspect is described as a black man wearing all black clothing with a black jacket and scarf. He has a slight build.
