The third annual “Stars & Stripes Spectacular” celebration of the Fourth of July kicks off tomorrow at noon. That’s when vendors along the Eastern Promenade will be open to the public as in past years.

From 3 to 6 pm, a new feature will debut. It’s the Great American Ice Cream Fest. 2,000 people are invited to purchase tickets to participate in an ice cream tasting event in which they will be able to pick their favorite flavor from among a number of Maine ice cream producers. The cost of tickets for adults is $8. and for children under 12, $5. Proceeds will go to Share Our Strength and Mercy Hospital.

At 4 pm., Munjoy Hill will be closed to all traffic.

At 7:40 pm., the Portland Symphony Orchestra, directed by Robert Moody, will conduct its Patriotic Pops Concert. Joing them for the first year, is the 60 voice Magic of Christmas choir, replacing soloists from the past two Spectaculars. The PSO will play for the duration of the Fireworks Show which begins at 9:20 pm.

The public is urged to keep all pets at home because of the noise and crowds.
