Lucid Stage to Close Its Doors – Probably the End of September

By Carol McCracken (Post # 1,199)

Lucid Stage will be closing its doors soon according to a press release issued from the non-profit this morning. The closing could come at the end of September or early October. The unsigned announced, presumably from Liz McMahone, the theater’s founder, cited a lack of a business background as the cause of the closing.

“Personally, I am not taking this as a failure, but simply as a life lesson. Sometimes we want something so much that we wear rose-colored glasses and leap before looking. In this case, Lucid’s initial business plan was overly optimistic about how much fundrising and grant funding we would be able to get within the first two years. The lesson to me has been that having optimism and a strong work ethic aren’t always enough. As someone with no background in business, I should have undertaken some business training first, (at the very least,) I should have undertaken some workshops at SCORE, and consulted non-profit organizations for advice on creating a viable business plan.”

Performances continue to be scheduled at the theater through September 30th. On September 8th, some of the furniture will be available for purchase.

Founder Liz McMahon is a former Hill resident. Previously, she was a staff member at the St. Lawrence Arts Center on the Hill. She is also active in green politics in the City.

Lucid Stage is located at 29 Baxter Boulevard, Portland.
