At 11:15 am this morning an 18 wheeler Western Express (with Tennessee plates)  flat-bed truck backed into the fire hydrant at the corner of Cumberland Avenue and Boyd Street on the East End of Portland.  The Police Department was notified shortly thereafter and it shut down traffic between Franklin Street and Locust Street. Witnesses in the area saw the truck back into the hydrant as it was trying to turn around from Boyd Street.

Business owners in the area saw water shoot up over their buildings and the street itself  flood with several inches of water making it unnavigable by cars.   The fire hydrant was uprooted from its spot and was lying on the sidewalk nearby when mhn.com saw it.

Repairs are expected to be completed by 5:00 pm today according to the Portland Water District.
