A Drive-Thru Food Drive has been scheduled for Friday, September 18th from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm at Wayside Food Programs, 135 Walton Street, Portland. The food drive is part of a coordinated effort of the nine United Ways of Maine to address ongoing food insecurity and basic needs further exacerbated by the pandemic and demonstrate the collective power and impact of our communities. United Ways across the state will attempt to collect more than ever before in one day.
The first 100 individuals in the Drive-Thru in Greater Portland will receive a “DO GOOD” goody bag for their support. Community members are encouraged to pack a bag or box with cans and non-perishable food items, produce or home essentials (toilet paper, cleaning supplies and diapers), grab a mask, place items in the trunk or back seat and roll on through Wayside Friday for a contactless drop off that’s safe, easy and fund.
The Drive-Thru food drive is the final event within a week of virtual and in person engagements for United Way’s Campaign Kick off Week that includes virtual morning rallies, volunteer tutorials, and a virtual immersion on challenges facing vulnerable neighbors.
“We will not be doing the traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Portland Club that we have done for many years,” said Laura Hamilton, Development Assistant, this afternoon at the Wayside office.
