“Phenomenal” and “rich” were just several of the adjectives customers used to describe the desserts for sale inside the newly opened “Bakery on the Hill”, 253 Congress Street. The Bakery opened last Friday at noon and was worth the wait.

“I love this neighborhood and have wanted to be here for a long time,” said Wolf Gonier, one of the two founders of the Bakery. “This is the eighth bakery I’ve opened for other people and third one I’ve owned myself. I’m going to keep this one and keep it growing.” A Boston native, she opened a bakery, Marche, at the Prudential Center there. She studied pastry arts at Johnson & Wales in Providence. Her business and life partner Cecelia Vazquez worked in a raw food restaurant in Sedona, AZ – “a very virbrant area with sacred lands for native Americans,” said Vazquez. She attended Kushi Institute, a macro-biotics healing center in Becket, Massachusetts.

Don’t let the plain store front give you second thoughts because inside more than makes up for that first impression. An ample selection of chocolate desserts, bars and more awaits you – complicating any decision on what to buy. “Very good butter and high-end chocolate” are what make these desserts so oustanding. Vazquez concentrates on baking “raw desserts.” They are low glycemic, vegan and wheat free for those prefering those diets. at first doubtful that one of these latter desserts could compare to a traditional dessert, ate her words after sampling a strawberry tart. It was fantastic even without sugar and cream! As good as the brownies sampled as well.

‘BOTH” sells both traditional and alternatives for your holiday as well as everyday dessert needs.

Bakery on the Hill is located near the corner of Smith & Congress Streets on the Hill. It’s open every day now through the Christmas Holidays from 11:00 am – until 7 pm. No breakfast pastries are sold at Bakery on the Hill because there is little morning foot traffic in the area.

  1. Just had the German chocolate cake — simply amazing!

And the sample of dark chocolate brownie was incredibly good.

Hours are noonish to late evening, about eight, I’d gathered in talking to her.

Bring cash as they are taking credit cards yet.

  2. Looking forward to trying their scrumptious offerings! Thank you for writing about their opening.
